The cold night’s wind whipped across Adele’s fragile skin, her ears folded close to her head and she hugged herself to get warmer. Once again she and her friends had slept by the waterfall, only this time Adele had been awakened by something. She didn’t know why, but she had this feeling to see the dark ocean. Her feet quietly pressed down flowers as she trekked to the beach. The ocean waves pounded gently onto the sand giving an eerily peaceful feeling. Adele sat by the water silently, closing her eyes and listening to the gentle sound of the sea. She was drifting off to sleep when suddenly a cold, wet, scaly arm reached up to grab her ankle. Before she could utter a word, Adele was pulled into the freezing cold water of the dark ocean. Down she went, her captor never letting itself be seen. Her muscles tensed when she remembered the legend of Borland the sea monster. What if it was he that was pulling her? Finally her body thumped onto the floor of the ocean. Adele felt her body weaken from lack of air. She tried to swim up but gave up as soon as she realized she would never make it up in time. I’m going to die. The young norn thought. She relaxed and turned her head to see a strange sight standing in front of her. It was a norn! He was a beautiful shade of blue with deep purple eyes. He smiled at her and said something she didn’t catch. Adele backed up slowly, feeling her lungs bursting. The norn said something again. “Breathe.” Adele was frightened. She could feel the unconsciousness begin to creep in. The blue male grabbed her wrist powerfully. “Breathe.” He said again urgently. Adele knew she was going to die anyway and inhaled. The water swirled down her throat and filtered out again. She had gills! Adele smiled and inhaled again, the filtered oxygen flowing through her body. The male let her go triumphantly. He watched her breath until he was satisfied her health was no longer in danger. “Finally. I wasn’t sure I’d get to you in time.” Adele glanced at him half frightened, half curious. “Who are you?” She inquired slowly. The water made her speech difficult. The blue norn gazed at her before he answered. “I’m Shore. One of the few Mernorns.” Adele gasped. “A Mernorn? I thought they only existed in myth.” Shore shook his head grinning. Zander fish swirled around their bodies delicately. Clams popped and squeaked. Adele perked her waterlogged ears as she listened. “Your mother sent me to get you.” Explained Shore in a hurry. Adele couldn’t believe her ears. “I already have a mother!” She spat angrily. Her tail swished and her mouth formed into a snarl. Shore backed away. “She’s not your real mother!” He exclaimed. “Your egg was lost when you were born. Come on, follow me.” He grabbed her arm gently and pulled her toward a machine in the corner of the ocean. Adele couldn’t believe this norn she had just met was suddenly telling her the mom she had known all her life wasn’t her mom at all.
