Watery Fate

The crickets chirped peacefully in the starry night. The fruit bats commonly flew past the sleeping norns bodies, each creature ignoring the other. Adele suddenly opened her eyes to take in the accustomed view of the waterfall falling to the crystal clear water below. A sharp pain filled her chest making her breath come in small laborious gasps. “Katy!” Adele panted painfully. The Kai stirred groggily next to her and opened one eye sleepily. Adele swallowed and took a breath in and then exhaled shallowly, so the pain wouldn’t be so bad. Katy realized her friend was hurting and woke up quickly. “It’s happening again! My chest hurts so much.” Adele whimpered, her chest heaving with her strained efforts. Katy’s eyes widened fearfully. All the adults were on another part of the island, far away from the five rebel girls. “Adele, what should I do?” Katy asked nervously. “What happened last time?” Adele remembered hazily when she had hurt like this before. She was gathering coconuts from the island and suddenly her lungs felt like they were on fire. Her legs had buckled and she fell heavily into the sand, her face a few inches away from a hollow coconut filled with water. Adele didn’t know why she did it, but she grabbed the water and drank it, the pain instantly vanishing. “I need water.” She whispered faintly. Her vision grew dark and she knew she was near unconsciousness. Katy got to her feet and raced to one of the many hollow coconuts. Empty. She ran down to the beach and filled it quickly but skillfully, never allowing one drop to fall. Adele saw her friend’s form coming back into view, pushing the water to her mouth. The gray norn instantly drank and the pain was gone. Just as quickly as it had come. She inhaled deeply just to make sure she was once again healed before she hugged Katy fiercely. “Adele!” Katy gasped once she got a clear look at her friend. The gray was evaporating from the norn’s skin leaving a light yellow that covered her, matching her golden eyes. “You changed colors!” She said awed. Adele looked at her hands and legs before sleep overcame her. She blinked heavy eyelids as she curled up to the amazed Kai, falling asleep to the constant drum of the waterfall.
“Wake up sleepyhead,” murmured the familiar voice of Adele’s friend Neal. He thrust a fresh coconut under her nose, the creamy smell filling her nostrils, waking her up at once. She took it gratefully and looked up to see his handsome grinning face. He was a shade of light green, his eyes the deepest of purple. He had round ears and short fluffy Kai hair. His body wasn’t Kai, just his hair. “Thanks Neal.” Muttered Adele as she looked away from his deep eyes. “No problem.” He said honestly. “Want to take a walk later today?” Neal fixed his eyes on the younger beautiful norn. Adele felt her heart flutter. She nodded shyly to her friend’s apparent relief. He turned and ran back to his family happily. Adele finished her coconut, getting to her feet with a sigh. She had chores to do. Her mom had given her a list the night before on what she had to do. It included. 1.Push Implement, collect 15 Zander Fish. 2.Babysit the baby norns. 3.Feed dog. Adele hummed to herself as she made her way across the world, stopping on the way there to feed the brown dog Pitz. She soon reached the desert and wiped her sweating brow. She had lots of problems with heat that the other norns didn’t seem to have, but this wasn’t that uncommon. She was just sensitive was all. Adele pushed the fishing rod and watched it lower lazily into the light blue ocean. She lay down on the dock’s edge and watched the Zander fish swirl around the hook. The water was murky and she quickly lost sight of the fish as the hook descended still further. “..And the Norn sat down and gobbled a piece of cheese.” Adele sang softly. She looked down into the water again to see a pink flash. She squinted and looked even closer. Gravity betrayed her as the norn fell screaming into the cold water, holding her breath frightened. Adele blinked and the murky water became clearer. Her lungs burned and she looked up, the surface very far away. Adele kicked to no avail. She didn’t know how to swim. The norn didn’t inhale any water; she just kept holding her breath until she passed out. The fishing hook started to rise up to the surface with its prize. Adele was in the way, and the hook snagged her too, bringing her and the fish to the surface. “ADELE!” Screamed Katy. She slapped the norn as hard as she could. Wildness heard her screams from across the desert. She dropped her cactus seed and ran to the unconscious norn as fast as she could. The adult injected pushed Katy aside and injected Adele with a full syringe of Debrifilent. Instantly Adele’s chest heaved as she took her much needed breath of air. “Oh Adele!” Katy sighed relieved. She hugged her friend. Adele hugged her back and said thank you to Wildness. Adele glanced back into the ocean thoughtfully, and then walked off with Katy by her side.
